Dear Sirs,

I am in receipt of a cablegram from my

-

firm at Canton advising me that Cassia to the value

of about $3500 not including freight, which you

purchased of me and which you paid me for, has

been seized by the British Government at Hongkong

while the goods were in the course of transshipment

from the river steamer to the S/S Yokohama Maru

destined for the Pacific Coast.

The seizure has been made on the ground that my firm J.A.Kahl, Canton, is considered an enemy firm by the British Government at Hongkong.

Some six months ago I made application

to our State Department (upon proof which they

deemed satisfactory that I was an American citizen for 25 years or more) for permission to open and

establish a branch officein Canton, China. This

permission was granted by our State Department and a

cable was sent to the American Consul General at

Canton stating that I was an American citizen and

to offer me all protection and assistance.

As explained to you verbally, I have laid

this matter before the authorities at Washington

and have requested them to lend me their assistance

in releasing the goods.

At the same time I will thank you to telegraph to Washington urging the Authorities to use their influence that the goods be released at

once.
